Self-Drive vs Chauffeur: Which Is Right for Your Kenya Trip?
Last updated
When you plan a trip home to Kenya, or a business trip to Nairobi, one of the biggest decisions is how you will get around. Hiring a car gives you freedom and flexibility, but it leaves one question: self-drive vs chauffeur? Should you take the wheel yourself, or sit back while a professional driver handles the traffic? Both options come with the same cars and the same service from us. The right choice depends on your itinerary, how comfortable you are on Kenyan roads, and how you want to spend your time.
Self-drive car hire
For many returning diaspora and independent travellers, nothing beats having complete control of the journey.
Why people choose self-drive
- Privacy. Family conversations, confidential calls or a couple's weekend away, with no one else in the car.
- Flexibility. Stop at a roadside fruit stall on the way to Naivasha, change your plans on a whim, leave when you are ready.
- Feeling at home. If you learned to drive in Kenya, getting back behind the wheel is part of coming home.
Self-drive: what to think about
- City driving takes concentration. The Expressway is smooth, but rush-hour traffic, roundabouts, matatus and boda-bodas demand your full attention. Our guide to driving in Nairobi covers what has changed.
- Directions off the main roads. Rural roads can confuse navigation apps, and signs can be sparse.
- Your licence. You can drive on a valid foreign licence for up to 90 days from arrival. If it is not in English, you also need an International Driving Permit. Staying longer? Confirm with NTSA. See the documents you need.
- Our driver requirements. You need to be 25 or over. Extra drivers are welcome: we add them to the rental agreement, and they need to meet the same requirements.
Self-drive suits: returning residents confident on Kenyan roads, business travellers with a tight city schedule, and families who want complete privacy.
Chauffeur-driven car hire
If your goal is rest, productivity or simply zero stress, a car with a driver is the upgrade.
Why people choose a chauffeur
- No driving fatigue. Skip the rush hour and the long upcountry stretches. Rest, enjoy the view or answer emails from the back seat.
- Experienced, familiar drivers. Our chauffeurs are professional, vetted, long-term members of our team, and many repeat clients ask for the same driver every trip.
- Local knowledge. A Nairobi driver knows the traffic, the back routes and the quickest way to your meeting.
- No parking hassle. Your driver drops you at the door in Westlands or the city centre and looks after the car.
- Peace of mind on unfamiliar roads. On a long drive upcountry or a route you don't know, an experienced local driver is reassuring.
Chauffeur: what to think about
- A little less privacy. Our chauffeurs are professional and discreet, but there is someone else in the car.
- Planning your day. You will agree pickup times with your driver.
- Cost. A chauffeur is an extra daily charge on top of the self-drive rate: KES 4,000 a day within Nairobi, or KES 5,000 a day outside Nairobi. On trips away from Nairobi you also cover your driver's food and overnight accommodation. Your quote shows the chauffeur on its own line, so you see exactly what you are paying for before you book.
A chauffeur suits: first-time visitors, anyone who would rather avoid Nairobi traffic, executives who need a mobile office, elderly relatives, weddings and events, and long road trips.
Quick guide: which one fits your trip?
- Landing after an overnight flight: a chauffeur for the drive in, so you can rest.
- A week of meetings in Westlands and Upper Hill: a chauffeur saves you parking and traffic stress; self-drive works if you know the city well.
- Visiting family upcountry: self-drive in a 4x4 gives you freedom; a chauffeur means everyone can relax on the long drive.
- A wedding or family event: a chauffeur, so the family arrives together and on time.
- A trip to the Maasai Mara or the lakes: either works for the drive there. Game drives are not allowed in our cars, except in our Land Cruiser Safari; otherwise your lodge or a safari operator takes you out in the park. Read our road trip guide first.
Which cars suit each option?
Every car in our fleet can be booked self-drive or with a chauffeur, for trips within Nairobi and throughout Kenya.
- Chauffeur favourites: the Toyota Alphard, a lounge on wheels for families and VIP guests, and the Land Cruiser V8 for executive travel.
- Self-drive favourites: the Mazda CX-5 and Toyota Harrier for the city, the Toyota Prado for upcountry, and the seven-seat Mazda CX-8 for families.
Want a bit of both?
Some trips need a driver for part of the time: a wedding day, a big family gathering or the long run upcountry, with the rest of the stay spent driving yourself. Tell us your plans on WhatsApp and we will work out the options and the all-in price for your dates.
Getting the most from a chauffeur
- Share your itinerary in advance, even a rough one, so your driver can plan routes around the traffic.
- Agree pickup times each evening for the next day, and keep your driver's WhatsApp number handy.
- Tell us about child seats, extra luggage or elderly passengers when you book, so the right car is ready.
- For events, give your driver the venue, the timings and a contact on the day.
Drive or be driven: the choice is yours
Whether you want to take the wheel on the Expressway or sink into the back seat of an Alphard after a long flight, the booking is the same. Choose your car from the fleet, tick the chauffeur option or tell us you want one, and you will get an all-in quote. See how booking works.
