Land Cruiser V8 vs Prado: Which 4x4 Fits Your Kenya Trip?
Last updated
If your trip to Kenya involves long drives, whether that is heading shags (upcountry) to see family or out towards the Maasai Mara, you will want a proper 4x4. Two names come up again and again: the Land Cruiser V8 and the Land Cruiser Prado. Both wear the badge Kenyans trust most, but they suit different trips and different budgets. Here is how the Land Cruiser V8 vs Prado choice plays out on Kenyan roads, whether you are booking self-drive or with a chauffeur.
The quick answer
- Choose the Prado if you want one capable, comfortable 4x4 for the whole trip: city meetings one day, a weekend in Naivasha the next.
- Choose the Land Cruiser V8 if you want maximum comfort, space and presence for executive travel, VIP guests or long drives with a full car.
- Choose neither if you are staying on tarmac and just need space: the Toyota Alphard or Mazda CX-8 may suit you better (more on those below).
The Land Cruiser V8: the executive powerhouse
The V8 is the vehicle Kenyans mean when they say someone has arrived. It is big, quiet and imposing, and it turns heads outside a Westlands office or at a family wedding alike.
- The car: most V8s on Kenyan roads are the 200 Series, which Toyota built until 2021. It came with a 4.5-litre V8 diesel or a 4.6- or 4.7-litre V8 petrol, depending on the year and market. Its successor, the 300 Series, uses a twin-turbo V6 instead, though many people in Kenya still call any big Land Cruiser a "V8".
- Comfort: leather seats, strong air conditioning, excellent sound insulation and enough room that a five- or six-hour drive to the Maasai Mara never feels cramped.
- Seats: seven or eight, depending on the version.
- Four-wheel drive: plenty of grip and ground clearance for heavy rain, potholes and long upcountry highways.
- Trade-offs: it uses more fuel than anything else in our fleet, and its size makes tight Nairobi car parks and side streets more work.
Best for: executives and VIP transport, large families, long drives in comfort, weddings and big occasions. See the Land Cruiser V8 for hire in Nairobi.
The Land Cruiser Prado: the versatile all-rounder
If the V8 is the statement piece, the Prado is the workhorse, and it is one of the most popular 4x4s in Kenya for good reason. It has the ground clearance and four-wheel drive for upcountry roads, but it is compact enough to feel at home in a Kilimani car park.
- The car: most Prados on Kenyan roads are the 150 Series. Later ones commonly have a 2.8-litre turbodiesel, which is noticeably easier on fuel than the V8.
- Comfort: a high driving position, a smooth ride on rough roads and good air conditioning.
- Seats: five, or seven in versions with a third row, which suits children or shorter trips.
- Four-wheel drive: good grip and clearance for the rainy season and rough patches of tarmac.
- Trade-offs: less cabin space and road presence than the V8.
Best for: diaspora visitors who want one car for everything, family trips upcountry, long drives to the lakes and the Mara, and business travel with weekends away. See the Toyota Prado for hire in Nairobi.
Every car in our fleet is a 2019 model or newer, but engines and seat layouts vary between model years, so ask us which version your car is when you book.
Side by side
- Size and parking: the Prado is easier in the city.
- Fuel: the Prado uses noticeably less.
- Space: the V8 has more room, especially in the back.
- Road presence: the V8, without question.
- Long drives upcountry: both are excellent.
- Price: rates depend on the car and your dates. Your quote shows the full, all-in price.
What about the Land Cruiser Safari?
In Kenya, "Land Cruiser Safari" usually means the most rugged, utilitarian branch of the Land Cruiser family, above all the 70 Series, often called the Hardtop, which you see all over the national parks. These are built for toughness first, with heavy-duty suspension, high ground clearance and simple, strong four-wheel drive. Next to a Prado or V8 the cabin is plainer and the ride firmer.
Our Land Cruiser Safari is our game-drive vehicle, and the only car in our fleet allowed on game drives in the Maasai Mara and other parks. Ask us about its fit-out and seats for your dates. The V8 and the Prado stay on paved roads and can't be taken on game drives, so if you choose one of them, your lodge or camp runs game drives in its own vehicles. For comfort on long days and in the city, most visitors still prefer a Prado or V8. To plan the safari itself, see Urban Escape Kenya's Maasai Mara guide.
When you don't need a 4x4
Not every trip needs a big four-wheel drive. If you are staying mostly on tarmac, two other cars in our fleet give you serious comfort:
- The Toyota Alphard is built for being driven, not driving. Captain seats, generous legroom and sliding doors make it the top pick for airport transfers, family groups and chauffeured VIP guests.
- The Mazda CX-8 gives you seven seats in three rows with a quiet, premium cabin. It is easier to drive and park in Nairobi than a Land Cruiser, and suits families and business travellers who need three rows but not a 4x4's clearance.
How to choose
- Want maximum presence and comfort, and don't mind the fuel bill? Book the Land Cruiser V8.
- Want one capable, comfortable car for the whole trip? Book the Prado.
- Travelling with family and luggage, or want a chauffeured airport pickup in real comfort? Book the Alphard.
- Want seven seats with easier city driving? Book the Mazda CX-8.

Questions
Which is better for the Maasai Mara, the Land Cruiser V8 or the Prado?
Both make the long drive comfortable. The V8 gives you more space; the Prado uses less fuel and is easier to drive and park. Neither can be taken on game drives, so your lodge or camp takes you into the reserve, or you can hire our Land Cruiser Safari, the only car in our fleet allowed on game drives.
Is the Prado a Land Cruiser?
Yes. Its full name is the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. It is a smaller, lighter member of the Land Cruiser family than the V8.
How many seats do the Land Cruiser V8 and Prado have?
The Land Cruiser V8 seats seven or eight depending on the version. The Prado seats five, or seven in versions with a third row. Ask us which version your car is when you book.
Do you have the Land Cruiser Safari?
Yes. The Land Cruiser Safari is our game-drive vehicle, and the only car in our fleet allowed on game drives. Ask us about its fit-out and seats for your dates.
Is the Land Cruiser V8 still made?
No. The 200 Series V8 was built until 2021. Its replacement, the 300 Series, uses a twin-turbo V6, but many people in Kenya still call a big Land Cruiser a "V8".
