JKIA to Karen, Gigiri and Kilimani: Drive Times and Routes

Last updated

From Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), Kilimani is usually the quickest of the three to reach, Karen and Gigiri take longer, and all three can take well over an hour at rush hour. Nairobi drive times vary more with the time of day than with distance, so this guide gives ranges, the usual routes, and the habits that save time. Treat every figure as a guide, not a promise.

The honest rule

A drive that takes 30 minutes at 10 at night can take 90 minutes at 5:30 pm on a weekday. The biggest factors are:

  • The time of day: weekday mornings (about 6:30 to 9:30 am) and evenings (about 4:30 to 8:00 pm) are the slowest.
  • Rain, which slows everything.
  • Fridays, the end of the month, and the days before public holidays.
  • Roadworks and accidents, which can close a lane without warning.

Check Google Maps or Waze just before you leave: live traffic beats any guide.

JKIA to Kilimani

  • Usual route: the Nairobi Expressway from the airport towards Westlands, leaving near the city end, then across to Kilimani via Valley Road or Ngong Road. Or Mombasa Road and Uhuru Highway below the Expressway.
  • Light traffic (late evening, early morning, Sunday): often 25 to 40 minutes.
  • Rush hour: an hour or more.
  • Kilimani, Kileleshwa and Lavington are close to each other, so the times are similar.

JKIA to Karen

  • Usual route: the Southern Bypass from Mombasa Road round the south of the city to Karen, avoiding the centre.
  • Light traffic: often 35 to 50 minutes.
  • Rush hour: 75 minutes or more, especially near the Langata and Karen ends.
  • Staying in Langata or near the Hub Karen? The same route applies.

JKIA to Gigiri (and Runda)

  • Usual routes: the Expressway to Westlands, then up Waiyaki Way or through Parklands and Limuru Road to Gigiri; or the Eastern Bypass and Thika Road, joining from the north-east.
  • Light traffic: often 40 to 55 minutes.
  • Rush hour: 90 minutes or more.
  • Gigiri is home to the United Nations offices and several embassies, so expect security checks at gates.

The Expressway

The Nairobi Expressway is an elevated toll road from Mlolongo, past JKIA, over Mombasa Road and Uhuru Highway to Westlands. It is usually the quickest way across the city, especially at busy times. From JKIA to Westlands the toll is about KES 330 for a car (January 2026 rate; rates can change), passed on at cost with no admin fee. You can pay with an electronic toll tag, the Expressway's tap card, M-Pesa or cash, and most of our cars carry an electronic toll card: tell us before you arrive if you would like to use it. Our JKIA to Westlands guide covers the route in detail.

Night arrivals

Many flights land late at night. Roads are quieter, so the drive is usually quicker, but you are tired after a long flight. If you would rather not drive on the first night, add a chauffeur for the day: KES 4,000 a day in Nairobi. Your driver meets you in arrivals with a sign bearing your name, tracks your flight, and drives you to your door.

Delivery to Karen, Gigiri or Kilimani

We deliver to hotels and homes in all three areas for KES 1,000, the same as anywhere in Nairobi, and collect from them for KES 1,000. If you land and want to go straight to bed, we can deliver the car to your home or hotel the next morning instead. See how JKIA car hire works.

Which car for the drive

For the airport run with luggage, a Toyota Harrier or Mazda CX-5 suits a couple; a Mazda CX-8 or Toyota Prado a family. Visiting Gigiri for meetings? Our corporate car hire page covers chauffeurs for delegations.

Getting from Karen to Gigiri, or the other way

Staying in one area and visiting family in another? Karen to Gigiri is a long cross-town drive at any busy time, often an hour or more, because there is no fast route through the west of the city. The Southern Bypass, the Expressway and Waiyaki Way can be quicker than the direct roads, but traffic decides. Plan visits across town for the middle of the day or the weekend, and leave extra time for school pick-up hours around Karen and Lavington.

Tips

  • Save your address in Google Maps while you still have airport Wi-Fi.
  • Keep bags and phones out of sight in slow traffic.
  • Keep some M-Pesa or cash for parking at malls.
  • Fill up before a long cross-town day: queues at fuel stations build at rush hour.
