Frequently Asked Questions About Car Hire Rental in Nairobi, Kenya
Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP)?
Answer: If you have a valid Kenyan license or a license from a Commonwealth country (e.g., UK, Canada, Australia), you can drive in Kenya. For others, an IDP is recommended. Learm more about obtaining a U.S. IDP here.
Can I take the car upcountry?
Answer: Yes! All of our vehicles are specifically maintained for long-distance and off-road travel. We just ask that you inform us of your destination for safety tracking.
What are the "off-limit" areas for your rental cars?
While our 4x4s are rugged, your safety is our priority. Our vehicles are permitted for use on most gazetted roads in Kenya. However, we do not allow travel into high-risk border regions, extreme off-road tracks that may damage the vehicle's underside, or overly dense high traffic areas with significant accident risks.
If you are planning a trip to a remote area (like Turkana or Lamu by road) or a high volume urban area (like Eastleigh), please consult with us during booking.
What is your fuel policy?
Answer: We operate on a "Like-for-Like" basis. The car will be handed over with a certain level of high-quality fuel from a reputable station (like Shell or Total). We simply ask that you return it at the same level so the next traveler can begin their journey immediately. This is the fairest and most transparent method for everyone.
Is there a mileage limit?
Answer: We offer unlimited mileage for all long-term rentals.
What should I do if I am stopped by traffic police?
Don't panic. Traffic checks are common in Kenya. We ensure that every Urban Escape vehicle has a valid NTSA inspection sticker, and up-to-date insurance. Always remain polite, show your valid driving license, and if you have any issues, call our 24/7 support line immediately.
