Best Road Trips from Nairobi: Naivasha, Nakuru, and the Maasai Mara
Naivasha
Nakuru
Maasai Mara
Nairobi is an incredible city, but one of the best parts about being back home is how quickly you can escape the urban hustle and find yourself in the middle of breathtaking landscapes. For the returning diaspora, a road trip out of the city is a must-do—whether it is a quick weekend getaway to the lakes or a multi-day safari adventure.
If you are planning to hit the road, here is a guide to three of the most iconic road trips from Nairobi, including drive times, road conditions, and what you need to know before you set off.
1. The Quick Escape: Lake Naivasha
Lake Naivasha is the perfect destination if you only have a day or two to spare. It is close enough for a day trip but beautiful enough to justify a long weekend.
Distance: Approximately 90 kilometers.
Drive Time: 2 to 2.5 hours (depending on morning traffic leaving the city).
The Route: You will take the main A104 highway northwest out of Nairobi. The road climbs up through the lush Limuru area before descending along the spectacular Kikuyu Escarpment.
Road Conditions: The A104 is fully paved and generally in excellent condition, allowing for a smooth cruise.
Pro Tip: Make sure to pull over at the Great Rift Valley Viewpoint for some stunning photos of Mount Longonot in the distance. Also, leave before 7:00 AM to beat the slow-moving cargo trucks on the escarpment.
2. The Rift Valley Classic: Lake Nakuru National Park
Famous for its rhino sanctuary and flocks of flamingos, Lake Nakuru is a fantastic self-drive safari destination that is easily accessible from the capital.
Distance: Roughly 160 kilometers.
Drive Time: 2.5 to 3 hours.
The Route: You will continue past Naivasha on the A104 highway, heading straight into Nakuru town before branching off to the national park gates.
Road Conditions: The highway is well-maintained and fully paved. However, once you enter Lake Nakuru National Park, you will transition to dirt tracks. While some are manageable in a standard SUV during the dry season, a 4x4 provides much better ground clearance and traction if it rains.
3. The Ultimate Adventure: The Maasai Mara
Driving to the Maasai Mara is a bucket-list experience. It is a longer journey that takes you deep into the heart of Kenya's countryside, offering views of traditional Maasai manyattas (homesteads) and rolling savannahs.
Distance: 225 to 280 kilometers, depending on which gate you are entering (Sekenani, Talek, or Oloololo).
Drive Time: 5.5 to 6.5 hours.
The Route: Take the A104 out of Nairobi, transition to the B3 just before Limuru, and head toward Narok town. Narok is the perfect halfway point to grab a snack, stretch your legs, and refuel. From Narok, you will take the C12 or C13 road toward the reserve gates.
Road Conditions: The drive is smooth and paved all the way to Narok. However, the last 70-80 kilometers past Narok leading to the gates are notoriously rough, bumpy, and dusty.
The Golden Rule: You absolutely need a robust 4x4 vehicle for this trip. A standard sedan will not survive the rugged stretch from Narok to the Mara.
